Oooh... I so want to see this. I'm taking a class at Stanford now on Nazi culture and the impact of German expatriates on California's culture, and just recently got to know all about Fritz Lang's history as a result. I didn't know this picture got him yanked into Goebbels' office and both chided for being a little too on the nose, but also offered the studio head job for the propaganda machine.

Yeah, it's funny hearing Nazi slogans mouthed by the film's diabolical antagonist, who is clearly a cypher for real-life horrors. Goebbels admired the movie but banned it anyway. When offered the job, Lang wisely left the country overnight!

Say Linsday, how do you manage to take the most awesome-sounding classes this side of the Mississippi?

Just lucky, I guess.

Wow, that's an impressive looking effect!

Yeah, your pic makes me pretty anxious to see this, too.

Is it unethical of me to have seen 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse before any of Lang's previous entries in the series? I feel like such a disorganized film viewer...

Loved this one. Just wish I'd seen it before watching Slavoj Zizek's new film, The Pervert's Guide to Cinema. Zizek gives away a significant spoiler... But he does that for most of the films he talks about.

One of the Mabuse films has a sequence where he is scribbling meaningless notes in his diary. This cleverly weird bit shows up in a really great Hitchcock Hour called, "The 31st of February".

And speaking of weird bits: love the Halloween pire scene in Hanover Square, which was re-used in Mad Magician. Strong stuff!

derf snikduj...Reactionary!
